Learning Design Summit Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Learning Design Summit?

The Learning Design Summit brings forward-thinking teachers and school leaders from around the world together in a beautiful setting to dive more deeply into what learning can and should look like in a modern world. You will be exposed to new ideas in education and have the time to apply them to your work as an educator — in your courses, classrooms, and schools. The theme for 2020's Summit is "Competency-Based Learning: Designing for Agency, Equity, and Transfer."

When and where is it?

The Summit opens for check-in at 4pm on Sunday, June 28. Our program opens at 5pm with a welcome reception and dinner. The program continues on Monday, June 29 at 8:30am and ends at 4pm on Wednesday, July 1, with an exhibition of learning followed by a closing celebration. Participants are welcome to spend the night of July 1 on campus. Episcopal High School is in Alexandria, VA, and is located 10 minutes from Ronald Reagan National Airport as well as in close proximity to restaurants, coffee shops, and all that Washington, D.C., has to offer.

A 10% discount is available for school-based teams of 4 or more (see below).

When should I arrive and depart?

Check-in opens at 4pm on Sunday, June 28. Our program opens at 5pm with a reception and dinner. Plan to book a flight home for 8pm or later on Wednesday, July 1. You are welcome to spend the night on campus July 1.

What are the venue and lodging like?

Episcopal High School is a boarding school located on 130 acres. It has many trails for walking and running, a fitness center and pool, and beautiful spaces for learning, both indoors and outside. In a change from 2019, we are happy to be able to offer every participant their own room in Episcopal's dormitories.

Is there a discount for a school team?

Yes. The Learning Design Summit is ideal for teams to move forward on collaborative projects. If you have a group of 4 or more from your school, you can receive a 10% discount per person. Please go ahead and register as individuals. You can pay via credit card or, if you are from a GOA member school, you may choose to have your school invoiced. You will receive a 10% refund via credit card or refund on your invoice once we have a record of your group.

What if I'm not planning to adopt or not sure about competency-based learning?

The three pillars of competency-based learning are agency, equity, and transfer. Our workshops and keynote sessions will explore the research, best practices, and potential impacts of those three elements in depth. Even if you are not adopting competency-based learning as a system at your school, the Summit program will deepen your understanding of how to apply agency, equity, and transfer in your teaching and leadership practice.

If I came last year, will I benefit from coming again?

Yes. We will have new and different workshops focused on our 2020 theme, including deeper dives into agency, equity, and transfer. Each participant will work directly with an expert advisor who will tailor their coaching to your particular project. You also will be part of a small advisory group. We set aside time for coach-supported independent work to allow participants to move forward on their projects. All participants will have the opportunity to share their learning at the end of the Summit.

Why should I come?

This is a unique opportunity to join a global community of educators for practical, hands-on learning. Come for the speakers, come for the coaching, come for the workshops, come for the job-embedded training. Come because you like to stay a step ahead. Come for the upskilling. Come to learn about competency-based learning. Come because you have something to offer to the conversation and because you want to soak it all in. Come to see old friends and colleagues. Come to meet some new ones.

I can't come this year! How else can I learn with GOA this summer?

We are debuting a brand new, 4-week online program for educators in July 2020 called "Competency-Based Learning: From Theory to Practice." If you can't come to the Summit, join us online by learning more and registering for this new program!
