Cohort | Rethinking Course Design

How do we design for learning experiences, and not just instruction? How do we create courses that are outcomes-driven, goal-oriented, and human-centered? In this Zoom-based cohort, we’ll bring together a community of educators interested in kickstarting a structured course design process at their home institutions. Through a series of four generative, one-hour monthly sessions, cohort members will learn the foundational, research-based domains of course design – establishing a responsive process, starting with backward design, prioritizing accessibility and usability, and creating sustainable measurement tools – and apply them to their contexts. Facilitated by GOA’s Design Lab team, the cohort is a collaborative learning environment where educators can create, share, and receive feedback from a community of peers. By the end of the cohort, educators will have an implementable course design playbook, will have applied a collection of strategies that improve their own learning design skills, and will be empowered to incorporate new course design practices at their home schools.

• Academic leadership roles, like directors of teaching and learning, department chairs, and grade-level heads, who are interested in establishing standards and support structures to ensure new measures of quality across a program or grade level

• Instructional or educational technology coaches who support teacher teams in course development

• School teams and districts seeking to establish a common language and approach to collaborative course design

• Classroom educators who are looking to upskill in instructional design processes

• Rethinking Course Design is designed as a hands-on, practical experience. In this cohort, participants will:

• Identify achievable steps toward creating flexible course design team structures

• Articulate a phased process for course design and development for online or classroom learning

• Interpret and prioritize accessibility and usability design principles

• Define metrics of success and data collection methods
