Summer Playlist: 24 Resources to Unwind, Reflect, and Inspire
What should educators read, watch, and listen to this summer? The GOA staff offers our top recommendations to unwind, reflect, and inspire.
At Pinewood American International School, learning is organized around a clear premise: students benefit from an education that is progressive, personalized, and internationally minded. This approach guides how the school structures learning and how it partners with organizations that can extend opportunities for students. Collaborating with Global Online Academy (GOA) reflects this commitment.
Where the latest statistics reveal only 13% of high school students give their school an “A” for making them excited about learning, the call for more relevant, relational, and student-driven learning pathways is clear and well documented. The Pinewood–GOA partnership is one response to that challenge, focused on expanding access to rigorous, interest-driven coursework and broadening students’ engagement with peers and perspectives beyond campus.
GOA partners with schools with a straightforward aim: create more personalized pathways for students to discover and explore their passions.
At Pinewood, the availability of GOA’s diverse catalog enables students to explore academic interests that may not exist within traditional school curriculum; from medical problem-solving to architecture, entrepreneurship to digital design.
Upper School Head Apostolos Rofaelas describes the shift this has produced: “When we began this journey in May 2024, our goal was to expand and personalize pathways to graduation. Eighteen months later, GOA is no longer an add-on or an enrichment option; it has become an integral part of how Pinewood students design their academic journeys.”
The range of courses plays a significant role in Pinewood’s program. As he explains: “Students who are curious about fields such as legal thinking, abnormal psychology, or marketing suddenly have access to courses that most schools simply cannot offer. For many, GOA is their first chance to test a field they believe they want to pursue.” This exploration is built into the school day rather than added on, which is crucial in supporting student success: “This exploration is not theoretical; it’s embedded into their daily schedule. GOA courses replace an elective, giving students a meaningful, academically rigorous option that shapes rather than supplements their path to graduation.”
GOA highlights “the power of schools working together” to deepen perspective-taking and global engagement. For Pinewood students—already part of an international school community—this creates additional opportunities to learn with peers who bring distinct experiences and cultural contexts.
This network also shapes leadership experiences on campus through the GOA Student Ambassador program. Rofaelas notes its value: “The GOA Student Ambassador program is another powerful opportunity. It provides a coveted leadership role, allows students to speak to peers in their own language, and builds skills in communication, mentorship, and representation.”
Student Ambassador Kheyden T. offers a student-level view of this impact: “The most unique aspect of being a Pinewood student who also learns through GOA is the numerous opportunities I’ve been given and the number of experiences I’ve earned…Learning with people who are from such diverse backgrounds has helped me improve my collaboration skills, as well as my ability to communicate efficiently.”
Her experience underscores a broader trend: learning pathways tied to real interests and authentic interaction tend to deepen engagement and clarify future goals.
GOA operates as a “lab school,” continually iterating on its pedagogical models. For Pinewood, this means students participate in courses that emphasize flexibility, collaboration, and application—skills closely aligned with current research on future-ready learning.
Rofaelas captures this shift: “Ultimately, GOA opens a future in which Pinewood students are not limited by the size of our campus or faculty. Their options are global, flexible, appropriately rigorous, and purpose-driven—and that is exactly the future we want for them.”
GOA courses not only increase access to academic choice; they also support the development of traits higher education institutions highlight as important—self-direction, curiosity, and initiative. As Rick Shaw, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Stanford University, notes: “When a student chooses to take a course like what GOA offers, they’re taking advantage of an incredible resource their school has made available to them… They’ve demonstrated that they will pursue their passions in myriad ways.”
For Pinewood students, enrolling in a GOA course becomes one way to demonstrate readiness for independent learning environments.
Pinewood’s implementation model, aligned with GOA’s recommended best practices, is designed to make online learning cohesive with the school’s broader academic structure. The supports include:
Demand has grown accordingly. As Rofaelas explains: “The demand is so strong that beginning in 2026–27, we are opening GOA courses to sophomores as well—evidence of how deeply students value these opportunities.”
This framework ensures that expanded pathways are both accessible and supported.
Together, Pinewood AIS and GOA are shaping a model of international education that:
The partnership works because it is grounded in a shared conviction: students benefit from learning pathways that reflect who they are and who they are becoming.
